Raw sewage can reach your property from a failed pipe, a flooded drain or an overflowing fixture, and once it spreads onto flooring, walls and stored items it becomes a health hazard, not just a mess. Sewage cleanup focuses on stopping that contamination from spreading further: containing the affected area, removing the waste, and then treating every surface it touched.
In Chicago, IL, this work usually includes removing sewage solids and standing water, discarding materials that have absorbed contamination, and disinfecting hard surfaces and salvageable belongings. Drying and dehumidifying follow, because lingering moisture after a sewage loss can lead to mold and persistent odors.
Not every sewage loss looks the same. Some are small spills limited to a bathroom floor, while others spread across several rooms, soak into carpet and affect furniture, boxes and household items. The right approach depends on how far the contamination traveled, what it touched and how long it has been sitting, which is why an assessment of the whole affected area comes before any cleaning.
Belongings need attention too. Hard, non-porous items can often be cleaned and disinfected, while soft or absorbent items such as upholstered furniture, mattresses and stuffed toys are much harder to restore and may need to be discarded. Property owners in Chicago, IL should avoid handling contaminated items without gloves and protective gear, and should keep food, dishes and children's items away from the area until it has been cleared.
